Switzerland is my favorite European country to visit. Beautiful scenery, Hiking in the Alps, small towns with old history. It is a top summer destination. The only drawback is probably that everything is expensive.
#1 When to Visit
If you enjoy hiking, Summer (mid-June to September) is the best time
#2 Where do you fly to
From US, the only two choices are either Zurich Or Geneva.
#3 Do you need a rental car?
I think for 90% of people you don't need a rental car because train is so convenient and on time in Switzerland. Plus riding a train you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and get some rest.
The other 10% case is that you need to save time or have large luggage. Hauling a large luggage around the city is not very convenient so pack less is the recommendation.
#4 What are the top places to go?
This is my recommendation - don't stay in Zurich or Geneva. There are large cities and are nothing special than other large European cities. I recommend two cities as your base: Lucerne and Montreux.
#5 12-Day Itinerary
Why 12 Days? From US there is jet lag. Also 12 days allows you to see best of Switzerland rather than 1 region.
Day 0 -
Arrive in Zurich, Take train to Lucerne, and stay in Lucerne
Day 1 -
take train To Bern for a day trip and come back Lucerne at night
